Jessie is a 15 (almost 16!) year old Dalmatian mix who lives right down the street from us. Although she doesn’t care for other dogs, she is a total sweetheart when it comes to people. She happily took the treats I offered and worked it for the camera like a professional model. She has some trouble with her hips, I believe, that makes her legs shake violently when she stands up or walks, but she is a trooper, despite it all. I believe this old girl will be around for a good while yet!
I’ve been attracted to senior dogs more lately. Sparky died one year ago this May, and in his senior years I didn’t hang out with him much. Sure, I still loved him and spent time with him, but I had Buddy to keep me company. Now that I’m realizing that Buddy isn’t getting any younger, I seem to notice older dogs more. Just because they are getting up in age and have their “senior moments” - and believe me, Sparky had his fair share of those - doesn’t mean that these dogs should be loved and respected any less. In fact, we should spend more time with them. More time caring for them, more time loving on them.
I really enjoyed my time with Jessie. Older dogs have so much to offer, and I think people should definitely pay more attention to them. Sure, they may need more help getting around, but that doesn’t mean we should pass them by.
Enjoy sweet Jessie. :)
